This qualification broadens and expands and covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the appropriate vocational sector. There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in the appropriate vocational sector and it is suitable for those who have decided that they wish to enter a particular area of work. It is broadly equivalent to two GCE A Levels.
Some learners may wish to gain the qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment or
to progress to a level 4 foundation degree programme. Other learners may want to extend the specialism they studied and progress onto the 180-credit oxford pathway programme level 4 leading to degree level university, which extends and deepens the specialist work-related focus from the BTEC Level 3 foundation.

The rules of combination of HNC and HND specify the:
• total credit value of the qualification • minimum credit to be achieved at the level of the qualification • mandatory core unit credit • specialist unit credit • maximum credit that can be centre devised or imported from other QCF Edexcel BTEC Higher National qualifications.
When combining units for an Edexcel BTEC Higher National qualification it is the centre’s responsibility to ensure that the following rules of combination are adhered to:

1 Qualification credit value: a minimum of 240 credits. (A maximum of 30 credits may be at level 6.) 2 Minimum credit to be achieved at the level of the qualification (level 5): 125 credits. 3 Mandatory core unit credit: 125 credits. 4 Specialist unit credit: 115 credits. 5 The requirements of the HNC have to be met. 6 A maximum of 60 credits can be centre devised or imported from other QCF Edexcel BTEC Higher National qualifications to meet local needs.
Level rules and mandatory core units must not be changed.
BTEC Level 7 Professional qualifications in Strategic Management and Leadership
are designed to provide focused and specialist vocational short courses, linked to
professional body requirements and National Occupational Standards where
appropriate, with a clear work-related emphasis. The qualifications provide short
vocational programmes of study that meet the individual needs of learners. There is
a strong emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of
requisite knowledge and understanding in the sector.
They are particularly suitable for more mature learners who wish to follow a short
